Goals vs Visions
With the seasonal energies now on the rise, it’s time for us to begin to set sail and start charting our course for the next year and beyond…
There is a core spiritual tenet that tells us the journey is the destination, but the paradox is that without a destination, we’re apt to lose our way and/or abandon ship when the going gets tough.
So, I’d suggest getting some clarity about where you’re headed… and being open to adjusting your course along the way as may be necessary.
It’s important to keep things balanced, and to include all areas of life, such as –
Spiritual
Physical
Financial
Vocational
Self-development
Family/Relationship
Charity/Philanthropy
Hobbies, Enjoyment & Fun
And then – and this is the important bit : Commit. In writing.
And keep this list with you at all times.
This last bit is not something I’ve ever hitherto done myself, but it’s a really great piece of advice that I learned recently – not, as you might presuppose, at a workshop or retreat, but at a business seminar!
The seminar presenter – now one of the world’s leading business consultants – told us the story of how, as a relative newbie, he asked the promoter of top motivational coach Tony Robbins if he would be willing to work for him.
The response was simple and stark : ‘Do you have your goals list in your pocket right now?’
He did. And as a result, the promoter agreed on the spot, knowing NOTHING ELSE about him.
The presenter went on to say that all the millionaires he knows carry their goals list with them. They dream the dream, then they segment their vision into short, medium and long-term goals which they copy onto a handy wallet-size card.
And, then, to my astonishment, he went on to tell this business audience that this is ‘Alchemy’, which he described as the process of turning intangibles into something real… or as they say in ‘The Secret’ – transforming thoughts into things.
Being taught metaphysics at a business seminar came as quite a surprise to me… and I wasn’t initially sure how to feel about it…
And it got me to thinking how we’re so open to information that comes to us from sources we like, and yet when we hear it – or something very similar – from a source that we don’t entirely know, like or trust, we’re apt to be irked and irritated, and then often forget about it or actively dismiss it…
And what we overlook is that, ultimately, it is all from Source itself. Everything that enters our consciousness can be a gift if we’re willing to let go of our judgements and preconceived notions.
Embracing the ‘other’…
Over the course of the next three days, I was increasingly stunned to realise how much the business world has adopted and embraced metaphysical tenets to consolidate their position and their power… and it has occurred to me that this seldom happens in reverse, as a subsequent interaction on social media was to demonstrate…
I shared the above story with a spiritually-minded, entrepreneurially-oriented women’s group on Facebook, and they didn’t like it one bit. They don’t, they told me, ‘do’ goals; they prefer ‘visions’ and going with the flow…
And I couldn’t help thinking that had I said this tip was gleaned from a spiritual luminary who was teaching the process of manifesting our dreams and visions, they would probably have been considerably more receptive.
The Alchemy was lost on them because the information had come from an essentially alien world, and they chose to focus upon the wrapping and not the gift.
And how often do we all do this? Had I not had those insights and revelations about that business seminar, my response may well have been similar.
Let’s face it – the word ‘goal’ does sound very linear and masculine, with connotations of football $billions and hooligans, as well as the hard edge and hard-nosed ego of the unhealthy masculine that we so often see playing out in the business arena.
BUT, what if – irrespective of our gender – we were to deploy the healthy Masculine in our life and work to provide more stability, structure, systems and order… might that help…? I think it would!
For instance, I’ve just restructured my Bespoke Retreats site, and there has been a significant increase in enquiries now that the concept of a tailored, private retreat is clearer.
My biggest seminar takeaway is this : If the elite of the business world can embrace our magic, then why not take advantage of some of theirs…?! WIN:WIN!
Some more food for thought –
- The word ‘VISION’ means ‘the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination’, and the meaning of GOAL is ‘desired result’. So, both are necessary, but – at least in etymological terms – a vision without a goal is something that stays in the ether.
- FLOW doesn’t mean floating along and being buffeted by the dictates of outside forces; it means being in alignment with your values and aspirations, anchoring your intention and then committing to the journey.
- DEVELOP AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE. What you appreciate appreciates.
- STOP CARING what people think about you. Social media = smoke and mirrors; what you think you see is an illusion. Hearts and likes will not make you happy! Step away from your monitor and go out and connect with the real world.
- KNOW YOUR WHY. Drive is ideally pulled by inspiration, not pushed by motivation. Getting clear about our desires, and understanding their significance to us avoids energy zapping and ego-led status symbol aspirations. Most of what we truly want cannot be bought.
