Letting go to allow the flow…
Some people believe hanging on in there is a sign of great strength, but there are times when the power comes from letting go, and the start of the year is a great time to do just that.
The thing is, you are changing. The universe around you is changing. Just because something was right for you in the past doesn’t mean it still is, and January is a great time for clearing the decks.
Simply tidying and cleaning works wonders; I’m not keen on housework, but I do love the feeling of spaciousness it brings!
But if you want to go deeper and really shift some stagnant energies, then clearing some of those old, stuck energies along Feng Shui principles will make a huge difference.
The concept behind it is that everything is energy, and therefore, redundant or unseen/unloved items carry the vibrational frequency of old, stuck energy which leaches out into our environment and negatively affects our health and wellbeing. Just as inner shift catalyses outer change, it works in reverse too; if you change the outer environment, then this creates lightness and space not only on the outside, but also on the inside.
Think of this as a quantum detox!
There’s an ancient Feng Shui ritual that involves clearing 27 items on nine consecutive days and I decided to structure my own decluttering process accordingly. The magic is very much in the numbers, and missing a day entails starting again from the beginning, and so I was very diligent.
Use it, Love it or Bin it!
This is the classic Feng Shui clutter clearing mantra, and there are heaps of small and large items we can jettison, sell or give away, such as :
- Broken appliances and redundant phones, computers etc.
- Out-of-date food items at the back of your cupboards
- Old medicines
- Any broken or cracked items of crockery or cutlery
- Decorative items which no longer bring you joy
- Anything that holds sad or unhappy memories, or binds you uncomfortably to the past
- Old magazines and books gathering dust on shelves
- Redundant office items such as dried up markers and broken pens
- Anything that was given to you as a gift from someone you dislike
- The dregs of lotions, potions and old cosmetics
- Clothing that you’ve outgrown or not worn for a year or more
The process may sound simple, but it’s not always easy.
I began with the easy wins and moved gradually into the areas that I found more challenging. I had to dig deeper with each passing day as I grappled with some of my choices to keep or bin items that had an emotional charge for me.
In particular, I found relinquishing some of my beautiful evening clothes really tough; it’s true that some items hadn’t seen the light of day for a decade or more, and I spent a bittersweet hour or two reminiscing about times past. But a memory is not a destiny, and I duly earmarked all those lovely things for the charity shop.
I laughed and cried as I read through old journals and diaries – much of which was subsequently ceremonially burned – and I also unearthed some lovely treasures along the way, and revelled in the increasing sense of lightness I was feeling, and by the end of day 9, my mission was accomplished, and having binned all the rubbish, I set off with the good stuff to the charity shop.
But as I parked, I suddenly realised that the walk to the shop entailed traversing an underpass where some of the local homeless people reside. I stopped in my tracks; this was excruciating. How could I walk past homeless people with huge bags full of perfectly decent possessions which I – in all my self-satisfied glory – had the audacity to be chucking out…?
The juxtaposition was stark and uncomfortable and the moment required some serious re-framing; I reminded myself that energy – like money – needs to flow, and that joyfully donating what I no longer needed to help a local charity was actually a Very Good Thing To Be Doing.
But still, it was a sobering reminder that, ‘There but for the grace of God…’ and the whole experience has served to open up a profound and truly heartfelt sense of gratitude within me.
I’d been aware of increasing background noise about possible recession this year which had been unsettling me, yet now I was able to recognise – with humility and compassion – that what we see (and hear) is never the whole story.
Metaphysics tells us that money is an effect and that abundance is an inside job, and any belief in the thought that I was somehow being ‘ungrateful’ for having binned or re-purposed my unwanted stuff was a story I needed to move away from.
Because the truth is, the sooner we choose to see our world as a place of abundance instead of lack, the sooner we can loosen our grip on the things that are no longer working. The sooner we surrender to the truth that our perspective is limited, the sooner we begin creating space for heart-centred expansion.
And if I want to help those homeless people that I passed – and the many more like them – then the simple fact is that I can only do that from a position of financial health. Simply put, we cannot give what we don’t have.
The path to abundance is about jettisoning not only the material clutter to make way for the new, but also releasing the part of ourselves that says we can’t be spiritual and wealthy. It’s about reframing the negative conditioning that says ‘money is the root of all evil’, and instead believing that it is a good, safe and lovely thing to have, and that it’s a channel that enables us to spread goodness around.
The process starts with getting clear and getting grateful
Your money centre is your sacral chakra, which is also your relationships zone (in physical terms, this includes your reproductive, digestive and elimination systems) Blocks here will scupper the abundance process, so it’s well worth looking at healing this – and you might want to check out my Energy Clearing service; these self-sabotaging beliefs go deep, and it’s far easier for someone else to clear them than to attempt it on your own.
But Feng Shui-style clutter clearing is absolutely something that you can do for yourself, and from there, you might also want to think about taking up a creative hobby, such as dancing, painting, growing plants, swimming or cooking. And get your spine fixed. Spend more time with friends. And rediscover pleasure…
Like attracts like. You can only manifest lovely stuff in your life from the loveliness that dwells inside of you. And it starts with finding the abundance – the joy, peace, love and freedom – that already exist (often unnoticed) in your world and saying ‘Thank You’.
