Easing into the New Year…
I’m going against a big ‘self-help’ tenet here, but here it is : New Year Resolutions are a waste of time and energy.
Of course, most of us are already well aware of this from personal experience, and yet the noise out there right now trying to make us believe that we aren’t somehow good enough and that we really must start kicking some ass to start the New Year in the right mindset is deafening.
Don’t fall for the lies! The fact is that most common resolutions are completely at odds with the seasonal energy of winter.
Take your cues from nature; animals are hibernating and plants are dormant. The dead of winter is a time of resting, conserving energy and warming and nourishing body and mind.
Despite the cultural emphasis upon attacking the New Year with restrictive diets or intensive workouts, this is not the time to be engaging in this sort of energy expenditure.
The seasonal energy is slowly changing, and you do need to be ready to catch the wave, but building momentum entails harnessing energy, and this season is best spent reflecting on who you really are and what you really want out of life, planting seeds of intention and watching them blossom into reality with the explosive energy of Spring.
So, my suggestion to you is that you spend the next two or three weeks in what I’d call an open-hearted ‘prep’ mode :
Go to bed a lot earlier – certainly before 11pm
Enjoy warming baths with the addition of magnesium flakes [magnesium reduces stress levels and aids restful sleep, amongst other things] and soothing essential oils such as lavender, rose, sandalwood and/or jasmine
Keep your body supple with yoga, dancing, walking and good sex
Reflect – meditate and journal to get clear about your direction in the coming months
Eat well – I’d suggest warm, nourishing foods with lots of herbs and spices. Also, cutting out booze and sugar is a good idea, and the addition of some magnesium and green tea will also provide a gentle inner cleanse, which is often useful after the holidays
Wrap up and get outside and soak up as much natural light as often as you can
And if you really must DO something right now…
Engage in a bit of self love.
- Be yourself. Don’t justify, defend or try to prove yourself; you’ll only attract the right sort of people into your life if you allow yourself to be seen for who you really are.
- Count your blessings and practise ‘an attitude of gratitude’ on a daily basis, and write your gratitude list every night before falling asleep. Celebrate the little things; your fingers, your toes, your eyes… you’ll soon appreciate that they are the big things.
- Lighten up. Refuse to take things (especially yourself) too seriously. A great mantra to adopt is : ‘It’s simple, easy and fun’.
- Get off social media. Your life awaits.
- Listen more. Speak less.
- Dream big.
- Be kind. Especially to yourself.
